The M.Ed Special Education Program
ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The course prepares the students to work as Master Trainers in the field of Intellectual Disability in Colleges and Universities. They will also work in higher positions in Govt. Departments and Non-Government Organisations in India and abroad.

Programme objectives
ICFAI University Tripura M.Ed. (MR) program is Recognized by RCI.

Special Education is an emerging field with the human resource requirement having increased in the past decade. With the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995 having shown indications that education is the right of every child with disability, the role of Special Educators has further been emphasized.

Keeping in view the need for Special Teachers at various levels, the M.Ed. Special Education (Mental Retardation) has been launched. If we look at the scenario of educational services in the Country, we have a large number of Special Schools, Special classes in Regular Schools, Integrated Schools, Inclusive Education and Special Education Programming in Community Based setting. The M.Ed. Special Education (Mental Retardation), aims at training Special Educators to work with children having Mental Retardation, in different settings as mentioned above. A person qualified in M.Ed. Special Education (Mental Retardation) can serve as Master Trainer to teach Special Educators undergoing training at Diploma or Graduation levels in Special Education (Mental Retardation). In addition they can assume the role of Researchers, Leaders, Capacity Builders, Developer and Catalysts in the area of Special Education (Mental Retardation).

After completing the M.Ed. (Special Education) program the student-teachers will:

  • Develop potential teacher educators to exert leadership in advocating and meeting educational needs of children with disabilities in various settings
  • Enhance special teacher educators the opportunity to develop specialized capacity for leadership in curriculum, pedagogy and universal design
  • Develop theoretical knowledge and skills in research methodologies and conducting research in order to enhance education of children with disabilities in all settings
Duration:

The duration of the programme is two academic year.

Eligibility

(a)A candidate who has successfully passed B.Ed Special Education (MR) from a recognised university or any other degree considered equivalent to B.Ed. Special Education (MR) from an affiliating university and/ or teaching department under any university recognised by UGC.

(b) A candidate who has successfully passed the B.Ed General course and has successfully completed a one year Diploma Course in special Education (MR) recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India with minimum 50 per cent marks in each course

A candidate for admission to M.Ed. Special Education (MR) course has to qualify in the entrance examination conducted by student has to qualify RCI entrance Examination. The candidate will be admitted strictly in accordance with the merit list prepared on the basis of Entrance Test results and career marking and reservation policy of Govt of India/ if at all we have to follow this rule. The candidates should have valid CRR Number provided by RCI.

Seats
There shall be 15 seats available for the Course.
Medium of Instruction -The medium of instruction will be English language
Course Pattern - The course will be offered through semester or any other pattern as directed by RCI from time to time.
Minimum Attendance - Eighty per cent minimum attendance is required both in theory and practical to be eligible to appear in the semester end examination.
Examination Scheme - As per RCI's Scheme of Examination.

Contents of the Course

The M.Ed. Special Education (MR) consists of 4 semesters of 2000 Marks. Different components of the programme in theory and practical courses are given below:-

ADMISSION MODALITIES

Examination
The examination of the Master of Education Special Education (Mental Retardation) will be held at the end of each semester.

Minimum pass mark
Minimum 50 % marks are essential in all courses for passing in the programme (Grace Marks as per University norms) .

Award of division to successful candidates
The following percentages of Marks will award the candidate to secure Division:-
50% or above but less than 60% : Second Division
60% or above less than 75% : First Division
75% and above : First Division with Distinction

Award of degree
The University shall award the Degree "Master of Education Special Education( Mental Retardation )" to the successful candidates.

Certification as registered personnel: It is mandatory for every rehabilitation professional / personnel to obtain a "Registered Personnel / Professional Certificate" from the Rehabilitation Council of India to work in the field of special education in India. As continuous professional growth is necessary for the renewal of the certificate, the rehabilitation professional / personnel should undergo in-service programme periodically to update their professional knowledge.
